Mongolian State Security 50th Anniversary Medal — History, Design & Rarity Explained

Introduction

Marking half a century of Mongolian State Security services, this commemorative medal stands as a rare and symbolic relic from the country's socialist period. Awarded in 1972, it reflects the dedication of those who served in safeguarding national stability under the Ministry of Public Security.

Origins & Issuance

The medal was officially instituted on December 29, 1971, by decree of the Presidium of the People’s Great Khural. It commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Mongolian State Security — a structure closely aligned with intelligence and internal affairs during the socialist era.

Over 3,000 individuals received the award, including both active officers and retired veterans who had fruitfully served in the Ministry of Public Security and related state security services.

Design Details

Designed by artist L. Battsengel and manufactured in the Soviet Union, this medal showcases a level of craftsmanship that rivals and in many eyes, surpasses — the design quality of Soviet KGB medals.

The medal hangs from a five-sided suspension piece enameled in dark green with a red five-pointed star at its center. The reverse includes a standard pin for attachment.

A matching ribbon bar with red, green, and gold stripes was also issued.

  • Obverse: A ten-pointed star composed of gold-plated and oxidized rays.

  • At the center sits a circular shield, filled with blue enamel and radiating sunrays, with a silver-plated sword laid over it.

  • The number "50" is prominently displayed in red enamel — denoting the 50th anniversary.

  • Around the sword, a green-enamelled laurel wreath sits on a gilt frame, inscribed with the red enamel initials “УАХБ” – standing for “Organ of State Security.”

  • Medal size: 36 mm

  • Full length with suspension: 68 mm

  • Weight: 24 grams

According to regulations, the medal was awarded to:

  1. Active officers and enlisted personnel of the Ministry of Public Security.

  2. Veterans who contributed to the early formation and successful operation of Mongolian state security institutions.

This makes the medal not just a symbolic award, but a record of loyalty and long-standing service during a transformative period in Mongolian history.

Why Collectors Value It

This medal is considered a highly desirable piece among collectors of communist-era intelligence and military memorabilia. Its clean design, vivid enamel work, and limited issuance make it particularly sought-after.
